Days after Ukraine launched a surprise military offensive into Russia’s Kursk border region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke out about it Saturday night by indirectly acknowledging the ongoing military action to “push the war into the aggressor’s territory” in his daily address.
Overnight Saturday and into Sunday, a barrage of Russian drone and missile strikes on Kyiv killed two people including a 4-year-old boy, while in Russia, the governor of the Kursk region said 13 people were injured when a Ukrainian missile shot down by Russian air defenses fell on a residential building.
The bodies of a 35-year-old man and his son were found under rubble after shrapnel fell on a residential area in Kyiv's suburban Brovary district, Ukraine's State Emergency Service said Sunday. Three other people in the district were also injured in the attack.
Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said this was the second time Kyiv had been targeted this month.
Popko said the ballistic missiles did not reach the capital but the suburbs were hit, while a drone heading towards the capital was shot down.
The Ukrainian offensive continued for a sixth day on Sunday and is an unprecedented move by Ukrainian military units on Russian territory. The exact purpose of the operation remains unclear and Ukrainian military officials have adopted a policy of secrecy, perhaps to ensure its success.
In Russia, the Defense Ministry said 35 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight Saturday and Sunday over the Kursk, Voronezh, Belgorod, Bryansk and Oryol regions.
Ukraine has not commented on Sunday's drone strike inside Russia, but it comes as Ukraine has stepped up similar drone attacks, mostly targeting military infrastructure and oil depots, in recent weeks. (lt/my)
