Russia has launched airstrikes on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Air defense systems have been deployed on the outskirts of the city to repel the attacks, Kyiv's mayor and military administration officials said early Sunday.
“Air defense units are operating, air raid warnings continue,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on the Telegram messaging app.
Reuters witnesses said they heard at least two explosions that sounded like air defense units at work.
It was not immediately clear whether the attack caused any damage or injuries.
Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said on Telegram that the capital still faces a threat from Russian ballistic missiles.
Kyiv, its surrounding areas and all of eastern Ukraine are under air strike alert, the Ukrainian air force said on Telegram. (ah/ft)
