A loyalist of ousted Sheikh Hasina has stepped down following protesters' demands, a presidential official said Sunday (11/8).

The incident is the latest in a series of new appointments to replace long-serving officials seen as linked to the previous regime that was ousted by student-led unrest.

Syed Refaat Ahmed, the most senior Supreme Court judge was sworn in to the post by President Mohammed Shahabuddin, presidential spokesman Shiplu Zaman told the news agency. AFP.

He became the 25th Head of MA, said Zaman.

Amhed studied at Dhaka University, Oxford and Tufts Universities in the US.

Hasina, 76, fled by helicopter to neighboring India on Monday (Aug. 5), as protesters flooded the streets of Dhaka in a dramatic end to Hasina's iron-fisted rule.

His government has been accused of widespread human rights abuses including the arbitrary killing of thousands of his political rivals during its 15 years in power.

Cabinet ministers blindsided by Hasina's downfall abruptly resigned, while several senior Hasina appointees were forced out including the national police chief and the central bank governor.

Ahmed Obaidul Hassan's predecessor on Saturday became the latest to announce his departure, after hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court demanding his resignation. (my/lt)
