Tropical Storm Debby slammed into South Carolina for the second time on its way up the East Coast, with U.S. residents as far north as Vermont likely to get several inches of rain this weekend.

The National Hurricane Center said Debby made landfall Thursday morning (8/8) near Bulls Bay, South Carolina. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and possible flooding as it moves inland across the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern U.S.

Television station WCBD reported a large hole left by the storm in downtown Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday night.

Heavy flooding is expected, and police closed parts of Interstate 95 in North Carolina after floodwaters covered the highway. The storm spawned a tornado Thursday morning that damaged at least four homes, a church and a school in Wilson County, North Carolina. (ab/ps)
