A plane with 62 individuals on board crashed in a residential area in Brazil's Sao Paulo state on Friday. The announcement was made by the airline, but it was not clear how many people were injured or killed.

VoePass airline confirmed in a statement that a plane flying to Sao Paulo International Airport crashed in the city of Vinhedo with 58 passengers and 4 crew members on board.

The statement does not say what caused the accident.

While attending an event in southern Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva asked the crowd to stand and observe a minute of silence as he announced the accident. He said it appeared that all passengers and crew on board had died, without giving further details.

Firefighters, military police and the civil defense authority sent teams to the scene of the accident in Vinhedo.

Brazilian network GloboNews broadcast images of a residential area engulfed in flames and smoke billowing from the plane's fuselage. The accident site looked like a residential area with lots of houses. In another video broadcast by 'GloboNews', a plane was seen falling vertically.
