Authorities in Kosovo said on Tuesday that a woman was wounded by a gunshot in Fushë Kosovë, a few kilometers from Pristina, and police arrested her husband as a suspect.
The spokesperson of the Kosovo Police for the Pristina region, Flora Ahmeti, told the Voice of America that “the police received the information about the injury at 07:30” and that “a suspect has already been arrested in connection with this case”.
The injured is being treated in the hospital of Pristina and according to the director of the Emergency Clinic Naser Syla, her health condition is serious but stable.
The Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, said that the suspect was known to the law enforcement agencies due to domestic violence.
“The suspect was in custody but was released because he was a recidivist and as soon as he was released he shot his wife.” she wrote in a post on social networks.
Minister Haxhiu said that this case is evidence of the negligence of justice institutions, criticizing the judge and the prosecutor who made the decision to release the suspect.
“We have continuously emphasized that such cases of extreme violence are turning out to be recidivists who have already been denounced or arrested for violence earlier. Therefore, it is inexcusable the negligence and lack of adequate punishment of these cases, which not only do not prevent the worst, but are turning into stimulants of violence and murders. she wrote.
Domestic violence, which in most cases is violence against women, has increased in recent years in Kosovo and remains one of the main concerns of humanitarian activists.
Three women have been killed since the beginning of this year in Kosovo. In April, two women, one in Peja and the other in Ferizaj, were killed by their husbands, while last week in Graçanica near Pristina, a woman died from the consequences of violence by her husband.
From 2010 to August 2024, 58 women were killed in Kosovo.
