Protesters threw objects at police in the English city of Rotherham on Sunday (4/8), while others tried to break into a hotel being used to house asylum seekers.

(ACT) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer strongly condemned Sunday's hotel attack, calling it an act of “far-right thuggery” as further violence erupted in cities across the country after a stabbing at a dance class left three women dead and scores injured.

In a statement from his Downing Street office on Sunday afternoon, Starmer promised that authorities would “do whatever it takes to bring these thugs to justice.”

Starmer was speaking a day after further far-right violence, the worst of which took place in Rotherham in northern England, where police struggled to contain a mob trying to break into the Holiday Inn Express hotel being used asylum seekers.

Before bringing the situation under control, shielded police had to deal with a series of objects being thrown at them, including pieces of wood, chairs and fire extinguishers. A small fire in a wheeled bin was also seen as windows in the hotel were smashed. (uh/ab)
