The paramilitary group Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Wednesday (31/7) said Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh had been killed in Tehran.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the killings, but reports The Associated Press said suspicions immediately turned to Israel, which had vowed to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders, because of the group's October 7 attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 people and took about 250 hostage.

The statement from Iran did not provide details on how Haniyeh was killed.

Iran's state television reported Haniyeh's killing early Wednesday, and analysts quickly blamed Israel for the killing.

Israel itself did not immediately comment, but it often does not comment on killings carried out by its intelligence agency, Mossad.

Temporary Reuters reported, the militant group Hamas has also issued a statement regarding this matter.

In a statement, the group expressed its grief over the death of Haniyeh, who it said was killed in a “dangerous zionist attack on her residence in Tehran.”

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in of Iran's new president on Tuesday (30/7).

“This morning, Ismail Haniyeh's residence in Tehran was attacked, resulting in him and one of his bodyguards being martyred. The cause is being investigated and will soon be announced,” said the Revolutionary Guard. (ns/rs)
