The United States on Monday (29/7) announced a new security assistance package for Ukraine worth up to $200 million and including air defense and anti-tank weapons, White House national security spokesman John Kirby said.

“This includes a presidential withdrawal package to provide Ukraine with critical capabilities for the fight they are facing, including air defense interceptors, ammunition for the U.S.-provided HIMARS, artillery and mortar shells, anti-tank javelin missiles and other anti-tank weapons,” Kirby told reporters.

He said the Defense Department also announced significant security assistance initiative funding to support Ukraine's long-term defense.

“The package includes capabilities to upgrade Ukraine’s air defenses, long-range weapons and anti-tank weapons, as well as to maintain equipment previously provided by the United States,” Kirby said.

Biden has signed nine security assistance packages since late April, Kirby said.

Ukrainian officials have been pressing their allies for months to supply more air defense systems to counter frequent missile and drone attacks from Russian forces.

The United States has provided Ukraine with more than $50 billion in military aid since 2022, but there are concerns about the future of US support for Kyiv if Donald Trump wins the presidential election on November 5.

“We thank our American partners for their leadership and steadfast support. Together, we will win!” the Ukrainian defense ministry said in a post on X welcoming the new package. (my/jm)
