At least eight people, including several children, were injured in a stabbing in northwest England on Monday, emergency services said. Police said they arrested a man and seized a knife.
Merseyside Police said they were called at around midday to an address in Southport, near Liverpool.
Police called it a “major incident” but said there was no wider threat to the community. Police asked people to avoid the area.
Photos showed several police cars, ambulances and fire engines behind a cordon on a street lined with houses.
The North West Ambulance Service said medics treated eight people for stab wounds. The injured were taken to local hospitals, including a children's hospital.
Colin Parry, owner of a car repair shop near the scene of the attack, said he believed several children had been stabbed. “It’s like something out of America, not sunny Southport,” he said.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said on social media X that she was “deeply concerned by this very serious incident.” (ps/ab)
