Protests erupted in New Delhi, India, on Sunday (28/7), as thousands of people took to the streets after three students drowned after water overflowed into the basement of a learning center.

The incident occurred on Saturday (27/7) when several students were studying in the library located in the learning center. The incident killed two female students and one male student, fire officials said.

Heavy rain that afternoon caused water to pool on the streets outside the study center. The water then entered the basement.

“The library is in the basement of the building and the students came out from there. We found the bodies of three students, two women and one man. We received information about the three and we brought their bodies out,” said Atul Garg, director of Delhi fire services.

Fellow students staged a protest outside the study center, demanding strict action against the violators.

“Our demand is that the authorities are hiding the real death toll. They are saying around three people have died, but the National Disaster Response Force personnel are saying more than nine people died last night. No senior officials have reached the disaster site, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is not taking any responsibility for the incident,” said Aman Kumar, a student who took part in the protest.

Meanwhile, another group of protesters blocked a road outside a train station in the city, forcing police to detain some of them.

Protesters also held a candlelight vigil that evening, demanding justice for the victims. (ns/time)
