When in the weight loss phase, we often avoid certain types of food, such as chocolate, pasta, cheese, and others. However, researchers from Aarhus University in Denmark noticed that French people often consume quite large amounts of cheese, but their bodies still look slim and look healthier.
As reported by Your Tango, French people have fewer cases of coronary heart disease and a life expectancy of 82 years, where on average they consume 23.9 kg of cheese per year. French women, who are known to have slim bodies, have the longest life expectancy in Europe, namely 85.3 years.
Hanne Bertram, a food scientist at Aarhus University in Denmark, tested her theory by comparing urine and feces samples from 15 men whose diets included cheese. He found that those who ate cheese had higher levels of butyric acid, a compound linked to reduced obesity and higher metabolism.
“Several other elements of the typical French diet may be responsible for the reduced death rate from cardiovascular disease,” said researchers from the related study. “We hypothesize that consumption of cheese, especially molded cheese may contribute to this.”
The scientists discovered that French cheese, known for its mold and green veins, has specific anti-inflammatory properties. Using new technology, researchers found the anti-inflammatory properties work best when the cheese is fully ripe.
Blue cheese, which is most often consumed in the south of France, has been shown to work best in the body’s acidic environment, such as the stomach lining or the surface of the skin. Acidification is also a common process that accompanies inflammation such as in arthritis-affected joints or plaque specifically on the walls of arteries.
Quoted from Healthifyme, cheese is rich in high quality protein. When combined with other fiber-rich foods, such as whole wheat bread, lettuce and cucumber, it can help the body feel full for longer, thereby reducing the temptation to indulge in unhealthy snacks.
If you want to add cheese to your diet menu, choose cheese with the lowest calorie, saturated fat and sodium content.
