Former President Donald Trump returned to a courtroom in New York on Thursday for his ongoing civil fraud trial, where his defense team is trying to convince the judge that his family company did not fraudulently inflate the value of its properties to obtain higher debt financing. .
As he left the courtroom, the 2024 Republican presidential nominee used his usual tactic, saying that the state attorney general who brought the case committed fraud, not him.
“The Attorney General committed fraud. You just saw it up there. He’s a fraud. This whole case is a scam. That is election interference. “This keeps me here and not in Iowa and New Hampshire,” Trump said.
New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking a $250 million fine and a ban on Trump from doing commercial real estate.
The judge overseeing the trial has ruled that Trump and his adult sons manipulated financial statements to deceive banks and insurance companies into providing favorable loan and insurance terms.
Trump’s defense team has called bankers and others who do business with the Trump Organization to testify that they did not rely solely on Trump’s judgment in deciding to lend money to his company.
On Thursday, a New York University accounting professor, who does not work for Trump’s company, testified that he discovered the company had made an accounting error in one of its assessments. But he said he saw no evidence of accounting fraud.
“He found absolutely no fraud, no accounting fraud, of any kind. This is a highly respected person. “I don’t know him, but he’s an expert witness, and he didn’t find any fraud,” Trump added.
In his testimony last month, Trump complained of unfair treatment and acknowledged that he was involved in some of the documents that were at the heart of the fraud case.
Trump is expected to testify again on Monday (11/12) as the final defense witness. (ns/rs)
