LIVERPOOL – Female boxer Natasha Jonas will fight to defend her IBF welterweight title against Mikaela Mayer on January 20 2024 in Liverpool. He promised to show strength that would surprise his opponent.
Last February, Jonas won the WBO super welterweight boxing championship via second round TKO over Chris Namus. Then, in September 2022, she added the WBC crown by defeating Patricia Berghult. Towards the end of 2022, or November 12 to be precise, Jonas will add another IBF title after defeating Marie Eve Dicaire.
However, Jonas went down one division, namely to welterweight, to win the vacant IBF welterweight world championship belt last July. In this duel, Jonas managed to record an 8th round TKO victory over Kandi Wyatt in Manchester.
Mayer, who once held the IBF and WBO super featherweight titles, has just moved up to welterweight, while Jonas is very mature in the division. Of course, the difference in punching power will benefit Jonas.
“I think so. I know what it’s like to receive and absorb blows from bigger athletes and I don’t see him hurting me in that case,” said Jonas, as quoted by Sky Sports.
“There were a lot of different variables he had to deal with, and one of them was being hit by a woman who was naturally bigger and stronger,” he continued.
Even though Jonas is now 39 years old, he is still able to perform very well at world level. He believed Mayer had miscalculated by accepting this challenge.
“He weighed 142 pounds (in his last fight). That means you have to gain 5 more pounds and still be able to perform. Is he the same person at 140 pounds as when he was 135 pounds? I’m not sure,” said Jonas.
“There’s a lot of science behind it. You have to get your body used to carrying extra weight. So far he’s used to weighing 130 pounds,” he said again.
