AMMAN – The coach of the Jordanian national team, Abdullah Abu Zam, does not want to underestimate the Indonesian U-23 national team in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup. According to him, all participants have almost the same level, so they have a chance of qualifying from the group phase.
The U-23 Asian Cup will take place in Qatar on 15 April-3 April 2024. The Indonesian U-23 national team is in Group A with Australia, Jordan and the host, Qatar.
Compared to the other three teams, the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup will be the first time Indonesia U-23 has participated. Since it was first held in 2013, until 2022, the Garuda Muda squad has never appeared in this event.
Abdullah Abu Zam commented on the competitive map in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup. According to him, all teams have the opportunity to qualify from the group phase and compete for tickets to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Each team in the group has the same opportunity to qualify from the first round (group phase) in an effort to penetrate the 2024 Paris Olympics,” said Abdullah Abu Zam as quoted from the official website of the Jordan Football Association (JFA), Tuesday (28/11/2023 ).
Even though Indonesia U-23 is the debut team, Abdullah Abu Zam said that the team level in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup is almost the same and they aim to go further. However, he emphasized that Jordan would perform optimally to get an Olympic ticket.
“All levels (teams) are close, and getting achievements in the tournament is the right of all participants. We will try to provide the best level that suits Jordanian football and reach the Olympics,” he said.
The 2024 U-23 Asian Cup will be the fifth time Jordan has participated. Even though they have never tasted champions, Indonesia U-23 should not underestimate Jordan because they finished third in the 2013 edition.
