JAKARTA – The national team recorded unsatisfactory results in the first two Group F matches of the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. After being beaten by hosts Iraq 5-1, the Garuda squad only held the Philippines to a 1-1 draw in Manila.
With these quite disappointing results, the coach, Shin Tae-yong, received criticism. In fact, some say that pocketing one point from the first 2 matches is a bad start.
If STY really failed to deliver achievements, 3 coaching candidates emerged who were considered worthy to replace him. These three names include Akira Nishino, Park Hang-seo, and Bernardo Tavares.
Apart from this, Shin Tae-yong himself has a contract until June 2024. Previously, the South Korean coach was contracted until the end of 2023. However, due to the national team’s needs in various events, STY’s contract was extended until June 2024.
During his time as coach of the senior national team and age groups, STY was very instrumental in guiding 3 Indonesian national teams to the Asian Cup finals. Yes, STY recorded new history by becoming the first coach to bring the Indonesian national team to qualify for the Asian Cup in three different age groups.
The 53-year-old tactician succeeded in bringing the U-20 National Team through to the finals of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup. Then, he led the U-23 National Team to qualify for the first time in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup finals which took place in Qatar. STY also qualified the senior national team for the Asian Cup finals. This is the fifth time that Indonesia will appear in the Asian Cup finals.
Apart from that, STY and Shin Tae-Yong were also able to increase the Indonesian national team’s FIFA ranking, which was initially in 175th position, but has now risen to 145th in the world rankings.
With his loyalty and a number of achievements, STY received a contract extension until June 2024. In fact, it is impossible for the former South Korean national team coach to get a longer contract extension if he is able to achieve good results in the 2026 World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers.
This was stated by the General Chair of PSSI, Erick Thohir, last October. “The assessment will be whether a longer extension is certainly in line with the achievements in the Asian championship (Asian Cup) in Qatar, both senior and U-23,” said Erick Thohir to media crew at SUGBK, Jakarta on October 10 2023.
“I think coach Shin Tae-yong has done his best when he brought the U-23s to qualify for the first time in Asia. This is the first time in history and our national team has returned to playing at Asian level after 17 years,” continued Erick Thohir.
