JAKARTA – Hamas or the Islamic Resistance Movement is a political and military organization in Palestine. Founded around 1987, its founding cannot be separated from the figure of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.
In its history, Hamas declared itself a Palestinian Islamic liberation and resistance movement. The aim is none other than to fight the Israeli occupation.
In addition to politics, Hamas also makes armed resistance its way of struggle. Several times, they often fought with Israeli forces supported by its allies in the West.
On the one hand, Hamas is a group that is idolized because it helps the Palestinian struggle. However, on the other hand, they are also considered a terrorist group by Israel and its allies, including the United States.
Reasons why Hamas is accused of being a terrorist by Israel
1. Considered spreading terror
According to the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), terrorists are defined as people who use violence with the aim of causing fear. The goals vary, they can be political or ideological factors of the leader.
Quoting the PBS News Hour page, Tuesday (21/11/2023), the United States first designated Hamas as a foreign terrorist organization in 1997. Soon after, other countries followed the US policy, including Israel.
It is recorded that dozens of countries have considered Hamas a terrorist organization. However, some of them only use this label for their military wing.
Israel and Western countries labeled Hamas as a terrorist organization due to its movement being considered radical. In many cases of terror and attacks that occur, they always accuse Hamas as the group responsible.
Not only rocket or missile attacks, but also various suicide bombings aimed at targets in Israel.
2. Struggle Strategy with Armed Resistance
In its struggle, Hamas is more synonymous with armed resistance. They often fight with Israeli troops, especially in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas may not be the official military of Palestine. However, their goal is clear as the main defender of Palestine.
Based on this goal, Hamas often launches attacks on Israel. They did not hesitate to launch rockets as a retaliatory attack aimed at Israeli territory.
