JAKARTA – Instagram users are warning each other about a new feature that could accidentally reveal personal secrets.
This latest feature update means anyone on someone’s “close friends” list can be detected. Previously, that information was confidential, and knowing who was considered a close friend could potentially cause conflict or other problems.
Instagram’s close friends feature allows people to select specific friends they trust more and place them on a list. Users can then share the story only with those friends, and the story will be inaccessible to anyone else.
However, in the latest update rolled out this week, Instagram now allows people to share posts and reels only with their close friends. This method opens this feature from just the Instagram story feature.
This mechanism is potentially dangerous because posts and reels include like and comment emoticons. So, anyone who sees a friend’s close friend’s post can now know that anyone who likes or comments on that post also belongs to someone’s close friend community.
Instagram saw the potential to make the app feel more personal. Instagram describes close friends as a “pressure-free space to connect with the people who matter most.”
“We hope this opens up more ways to be your most authentic self on Instagram while having more choices about who sees your content,” wrote Instagram in a statement reported by the Independent, Friday (17/11/2023).
This has also led to many warnings from TikTok users and others that users should be aware that they may be inadvertently compromising privacy by uploading such posts and that they should be aware that it may make their close friends list a little more public.
New close friends posts and reels can be used by sharing the post as usual, and then clicking the “audience” button and selecting “close friends”. The post will then only be shown to people on that close friends list and will be labeled with a green star icon to make it clear.
The list of close friends is the same for stories, posts, and reels. This can be edited by clicking on your own profile, selecting the three lines in the top right, and then selecting the “close friends” option.
