In a unique blend of virtual pregnancy and finance, Generation Z in China, born between 1996 and 2010, has turned to e-pregnancy games, namely virtual pregnancy simulations.
This virtual simulation offers the younger generation the experience of parenthood, including raising children without the physical and financial burdens of giving birth in real life.
This trend reflects the growing relationship between China’s digitally and cyber-savvy younger generation looking for a family and saving money.

The game looks for ways to reduce the rising cost of living and provides innovative approaches to save expenses. From purchasing virtual pregnancy tests and prenatal supplements to scheduling doctor’s appointments.
Simulation of being a parent and managing finances
This virtual game is almost the same as an old game called Tamagotchi which also went viral in China. Tamagotchi is a pet game and can be taken anywhere.
As the cost of living continues to rise, the younger generation is trying to save as much as they can. This e-pregnancy game gesture offers an introduction to the business of babysitting, while saving a little money at the same time.
Xiaoding, an unemployed millennial woman, played the game last September. She established her persona as a woman who was three months pregnant and named her baby Tiki.
Quoting from the Beijing Times page, her posts and updates about her virtual pregnancy journey, including purchasing test kits and supplements, have attracted thousands of followers. These followers participated actively, imitating Xiaoding’s virtual spending by saving the same amount in their own accounts.
The narrative created by Xiaoding not only includes pregnancy-related purchases, but also allows for the creation of a premium version of childcare, where players can save even more by opting for expensive health supplements and private healthcare.
Even though it’s only virtual, the e-pregnancy game also has challenges. Look at the next page, OK, Mother.
