Fasting is a worship that requires a person to endure hunger and restrain lust, from sunrise to sunset. This fasting service is divided into two, namely obligatory fasting and sunnah fasting. Obligatory fasts, such as Ramadan fasting, vow fasting, qadha fasting and so on. Meanwhile, one of the sunnah fasts is fasting Monday and Thursday.
Fasting Monday and Thursday is the sunnah of mukakad (emphasized sunnah). Fasting Monday and Thursday also has great priority, namely in accordance with the words of the Prophet Muhammad as narrated by Abu Hurairah:
“Indeed, the deeds of people are reported (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays. Then Allah swt. forgives every Muslim (or believer), except for two people who distance themselves from each other. Allah swt. said, ‘Postpone for both of them.'” (HR Ahmed).
Reading Prayer for Fasting Monday and Thursday
The intention to fast Monday and Thursday should be read separately according to the day you want to observe it. However, if you forget to do sahur and have not had time to read the intention even though it has been half a day, this cannot break the fast that has been carried out since dawn. Because, we don’t eat any food and have made our intentions.
This intention is very important, namely one of the conditions for the validity of fasting. Therefore, when someone expresses their intention to fast but in their heart there is no intention or strong desire to fast, then their intention to fast is not considered valid.
This was once done by the Messenger of Allah at a time when he came to the house of Aisyah RA outside the month of Ramadan. Then, he said:
Do you have lunch? Otherwise, I am fasting
Meaning: “Do you have lunch? So if you don’t have any I will fast.” (HR Muslim).

After fasting from sunrise to sunset, we break the fast. But before breaking the fast, it is first ordered to say the prayer for breaking the fast. His prayer is as follows:
Oh God, I fasted for You, I believed in You, and with Your provision I broke my fast, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
Arabic-Latin: Allah is the Guarantor of the Believer, the Supplier of the Provider, O Merciful One.
