Apple participates directly in the development of battery building materials, such as anode and cathode materials.
This development aims to develop a completely new battery with significant performance improvements over existing batteries.
Anode material is the main material that determines battery performance such as energy density, output and stability.
Apple makes cathode materials by mixing raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, and aluminum, and is known to be pursuing new compositions that are completely different from existing ones to improve performance.

Additionally, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are being considered as conductive materials to improve the performance of battery materials.
Conductive materials are materials that encourage the movement of electrons between the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material.
CNTs, which have recently attracted attention as secondary battery conductive materials, can provide excellent performance even in smaller quantities than existing conductive materials.
Anode materials are being developed to increase the silicon content dramatically.
Graphite is currently used as a secondary battery anode material, and the use of silicon instead of graphite can increase battery capacity and shorten charge and discharge times.
However, silicon has the problem that its volume increases during the filling and emptying process.
This means that Apple has secured the technology to overcome the expansion problem using silicon.
Apple is said to be planning to innovate on materials like this and create a battery that has never been commercialized anywhere in the world.
“As mobile user experiences have evolved with Metaverse and Mixed Reality (MR), demand for high-performance batteries has increased,” said several industry insiders familiar with Apple’s situation.

According to them, Apple is working from the material development stage to improving battery performance.
The news about Apple’s own battery development has been known since 2018 through the recruitment of related personnel and patent applications.
An executive from Samsung SDI was recruited and put in charge of the battery development department, then along with news of the development of the Apple Car, it was reported that the company was installing a battery of its own design.
However, the main target for battery development identified this time is mobile phones.
It appears that Apple is pursuing battery development projects on at least a ‘two-track’ basis.
