JAKARTA – The Indonesian national team coach, Shin Tae-yong, admitted that he felt calmer in managing the Indonesian national team than when coaching South Korea. He recalled how tense he felt while leading South Korea in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
Shin Tae-yong was appointed as coach of the South Korean national team in July 2017 with the task of reviving the national team which was struggling after unsatisfactory results at the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Asian Cup. While leading South Korea to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Shin Tae-yong feeling tense because the results will determine whether South Korea can qualify or not.
Shin Tae-yong recorded the moment of South Korea’s sensational victory over Germany in the group phase of the 2018 World Cup, but unfortunately it was not enough to get the team through to the knockout stages. This disappointed South Korean football fans.
“I feel more nervous (with the South Korean national team), because it determines whether South Korea advances to the World Cup or not,” said Shin Tae-yong.
However, after joining the Indonesian National Team, Shin Tae-yong felt calmer in preparation and training. He feels more comfortable because he has been in Indonesia for a long time and has received support from the public.
“But with the Indonesian National Team, I am more calm about preparing everything. Moreover, I have been here for quite a long time,” he said.
Shin Tae-yong has made a major contribution to the Indonesian national team, bringing three young age groups to the Asian Cup and leading the Indonesian national team to the third round of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup after beating Brunei Darussalam with an aggregate of 12-0.
The Indonesian national team will face Iraq, the Philippines and Vietnam in the second round of World Cup qualifying. Shin Tae-yong expects full support from supporters and believes that the presence of spectators in the stadium has an important role in motivating his team.
Apart from focusing on World Cup qualification, Shin Tae-yong also pays special attention to the development of football in Indonesia and tries to advance the national team.
