JAKARTA – The performance of Indonesian badminton men’s doubles in the last few months has continued to decline. This makes fans miss the duo Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo or what is often called Minions.
It cannot be denied, fans miss the unstoppable glory days of Marcus/Kevin. Meanwhile, in the current situation, Indonesian men’s doubles has experienced a drastic decline and can be said to no longer dominate.
Lastly, Indonesia has Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto who was ranked number one in the world. However, this week, they had to abdicate after holding out for no less than a year.
Longing for the return of the Minions has emerged. Moreover, the Marcus/Kevin duet was ranked number one in the world for almost 5 years.
Marcus also responded to this phenomenon. He considered that the return of the Minions was not a definite guarantee. The reason is, the current challenges are not easy. When compared with before, the 32 year old badminton player said that the opponents’ strengths were more evenly distributed.
“Now it can’t be denied that the opponents are more even. In the past, the opponents were mostly (Mathias) Boe/(Carsten) Mogensen, (Hiroyuki) Endo/Yuta (Watanabe) and Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen. Now almost everything was good from the first round -Good,” said Marcus to the media crew at the PBSI Cipayung National Training Center, Jakarta, Wednesday (11/10/2023).
He also defended his colleagues, especially Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto, who this week stepped down as world number one. According to him, Fajar/Rian’s own performance has been very good, but competition at world level today is not easy.
“You can’t say that Fajar/Rian has really declined, no. We have a lot of layers like this. From my time at national training, I think now they are the most balanced, of the six pairs, all are balanced,” explained Marcus.
“The opponents in badminton are also starting to even out. That’s also good for world badminton, how long do we want Indonesia to continue,” he continued.
The Minions themselves are currently absent from the field because Marcus is recovering from an injury. Since June 2023, Marcus has suffered a right heel injury and had to go to the operating table.
