JAKARTA – Sandy Walsh became the subject of coach Shin Tae-yong’s experiments when the Indonesian National Team won 6-0 over Brunei in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. After the match, the naturalized player admitted that he was willing to adapt to help his team.
Sandy Walsh played an unusual role as a defensive midfielder when the Indonesian National Team beat Brunei Darussalam in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. This is one example of his latest experience as Shin Tae-yong’s guinea pig. Previously, he was also placed as a central defender in the match against Turkmenistan on FIFA Matchday September 2023.
Walsh considers any role given to him as part of his duty to help the team grow and develop. He is ready to play in various positions, including defensive midfielder, although his natural position is right wing-back.
Walsh feels comfortable playing in the defensive midfielder position because he previously had experience playing there when he was in the youth team. This self-confidence motivates Walsh to continue to make his best contribution to the team.
“I give everything to help this team, for this team to develop, every time I come here, middle, back, front, we’ll see,” said Sandy to the media crew.
“I am a professional in this position, I have also been in that position in the youth team, therefore, I am confident in being placed in this position, to know how this team will be if I play in this position too,” said Sandy.
The Indonesian national team won the match against Brunei Darussalam with a striking score, but they remained focused and did not underestimate their opponent. They know that in the next round, they will face stronger teams such as Vietnam, Iraq, and the Philippines, so they maintain humility and concentration to achieve their goals.
