The home team started the first half well because they scored two quick goals in the middle of the half, according to UEFA records as published by Antara.
Marseille opened the scoring in the 18th minute through Chancel Mbemba after the 29-year-old defender took advantage of a pass from Jonathan Clauss.

While busy attacking, Brighton’s defense was caught off guard and they almost conceded for the third time in the 35th minute. Luckily, this time Jason Steele was able to ward off Harit’s hard long-range kick.
In the remaining time of the first half, Brighton, with its characteristic ball possession game, tried to dismantle Marseille’s defense under coach Gennaro Gattuso.
In the 42nd minute, the team nicknamed The Seagulls managed to dismantle the home team’s defense. However, unfortunately it almost failed to produce a goal after Ansu Fati’s header was saved by Pau Lopez.
Three minutes later, Brighton had a golden opportunity to score through Welbeck. However, once again Lopez’s brilliance under the crossbar still prevented the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker from breaking the net. The 2-0 score lasted until halftime.
