Rahmat Erwin Abdullah donated a gold medal to the Indonesian contingent from the men’s 73 kg weightlifting sport at the 2022 Asian Games. Not only did they add to their gold treasury, the Red and White lifter also broke the world record.
Rahmat succeeded in donating the fifth gold medal for Indonesia at the 2022 Asian Games. He managed to collect a total lift of 359 kg with details of 158 kg snatch and 201 clean and jerk.
This made Rahmat outperform Weeraphon Wichuma (Thailand) and Kum Rheak Oh (North Korea). Weeraphon Wichuma took home the silver medal after getting a total lift of 351 kg, namely 156 snatch and 195 kg clean and jerk, while Kum Theak Oh was in third place with a total lift of 344 kg from 151 kg snatch and 193 kg clean and jerk.
Even though he has succeeded in making Indonesia proud, there are still many who don’t know about Rahmat Erwin Abdullah.

Rahmat Erwin Abdullah was born in Makassar, South Sulawesi on October 13 2000. He is now only 22 years old, but has made many achievements.
Rahmat Erwin Abdullah’s greatness cannot be separated from his parents who are also lifters, namely Erwin Abdullah and Ami Asun Budiono. Rahmat Erwin Abdullah’s father won a silver medal at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Busan, South Korea in 1995 and a bronze medal at the IWF Championships in Istanbul, Turkey in 1994.
Meanwhile, Rahmat Erwin Abdullah’s mother is also no less accomplished. The reason is that Ami Asun Budiono is a weightlifting gold medalist at the SEA Games in Thailand 1995 and Indonesia in 1997.
Rahmat Erwin Abdullah started practicing weightlifting since grade 1 of elementary school (SD) under the direct guidance of his father. However, he had a long hiatus and returned to training when he entered junior high school (SMP).
Meanwhile, since junior high school, Rahmat Erwin Abdullah has diligently participated in national level competitions such as POPNAS and has been a regular on the podium. Meanwhile, the IWF Youth World Championship 2017 Tokyo is Rahmat Erwin Abdullah’s first international event.
The 2022 Asian Games gold medal is not Rahmat Erwin Abdullah’s first gold medal at international level. The reason is, he won a gold medal at the 2019 Asian Junior Championship in Pyongyang and a gold medal at the SEA Games in Manila, Philippines.
Apart from making Indonesia proud by winning a gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games, Rahmat Erwin Abdullah also successfully broke the world record. The score of 201 kg clean and jerk made Rahmat Erwin Abdullah succeed in surpassing the world record he held at the 2022 World Weightlifting Championships in Bogota, Colombia, which at that time was 200 kg.
Then, Rahmat Erwin Abdullah managed to break the men’s 81 kg clean and jerk world record with a lift of 209 kg when appearing at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He managed to surpass the record previously held by Bulgarian lifter Karlos Nasar with a lift of 208 kh at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships.
