HANGZHOU – The Indonesian women’s national basketball team has shown its struggle at the 2022 Hangszhou Asian Games since the group stage. Their persistence in competing finally got the attention of the local community.
The person in charge of the team, Christopher Tanuwidjaja, said that tens of thousands of spectators filled the venue for the quarter-final match. Unfortunately, the struggle of Marlina Herawan’s squad ended in the last 8 after being defeated by Japan with a score of 47-89.
Christopher said that he was surprised to see the match which was held at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, Hangzhou, China, Monday (2/10/2023) evening WIB. Not because of the match, but how busy the audience was, reaching tens of thousands.
“What was surprising tonight was that around 12,000 spectators came to the field to watch our match vs. Japan at the Hangzhou Olympic Center, and almost all of them supported the Indonesian Team,” said the man who is usually called Koh Itop through an official Perbasi release.
According to him, tens of thousands of spectators were amazed by the struggle of the Indonesian women’s basketball team since the group phase. Therefore, many local Chinese people came to watch the quarter-final match and support Indonesia.
“The hard work of Kimberley Pierre-Louis et al during the preliminary matches has become a topic of discussion among local residents and they have started to love the Indonesian Team apart from the home team,” said Koh Itop.
Meanwhile, the defeat by Japan meant that Indonesia had to end its progress in women’s basketball at the 2022 Asian Games. They finished in 8th place, where this position was a target that had been set before the event started.
Koh Itop said that Srikandi Merah Putih played better against Japan compared to the previous meeting against Mongolia. The final match in the group phase against Mongolia ended in a 69-64 victory.
