Legendary trainer Freddie Roach believes Jermell Charlo will defeat Saul Canelo Alvarez by knockout on September 30. Freddie Roach predicts that Jermell Charlo will become the first boxer in 64 professional fights to beat Saul Canelo Alvarez by knockout.
Manny Pacquiao’s longtime trainer has seen enough changes in 33-year-old Saul Canelo Alvarez to believe the hard-hitting Jermell Charlo can stop the Mexican icon.
Even though Jermell Charlo has made a weight jump of two classes and 6.3 kg for the main Showtime Pay-Per-View match on September 30 at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, United States. “Canelo has had an incredible career,” Roach told a small group of reporters.
“And even though I saw Gennadiy Golovkin win their first two fights, I was impressed with the way Canelo fought him. If Charlo had fought the version of Canelo before he fought Golovkin, I would have favored Canelo. But that’s not what happened. The current version of Canelo wouldn’t be able to handling Charlo,” he said.
Charlo, who is 182 cm tall and has a record (35-1-1, 19 KOs), is a knockout puncher in his two wins as champion in the 69.8 kg weight class. Saul Canelo Alvarez, who is 172 cm tall with a ring record (59-2-2, 39 KOs) has shown a strong chin throughout his 18 year professional career.
While Charlo will make his debut at 76.2 kg, Canelo Alvarez has a 7-0 record, including four knockouts, in super middleweight matches and was unscathed in his light heavyweight title fights against Sergey Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol.
Freddie Roach still feels that the very tough Canelo Alvarez will have a lot of difficulty facing Charlo’s strength in a 12 round fight for the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO 76.2 kg weight class title belonging to the boxer from Guadalajara. The Wild Card Boxing Club founder is aware that Canelo Alvarez is a 4-1 betting favorite, but he believes Houston native Charlo is mentally and physically ready to shine in the biggest fight of his 15-year professional career.
“I love the attitude that Charlo brings to the ring,” Roach said. “He’s ruthless and defiant, and better yet, he backs up that attitude with his talent. He can’t be intimidated. He has a strong chin and is unfazed by punches. Charlo is truly ferocious in the ring.”
“And although both can fight, I think Charlo will have too much firepower for Canelo to deal with, especially at his higher weight. Canelo will have to avoid Charlo’s left hook. The question is, can Canelo avoid Charlo’s left hook? I don’t think he will “I can, that’s why I chose Charlo by knockout. I can’t wait for this fight.”
