SAN FRANCISCO – Social media owner X (former Twitter) Elon Musk plans to charge users a subscription fee to combat bots on his social media platform. No kidding, this plan applies to all users without exception.
Elon Musk, who is one of the richest people in the world, revealed this plan when talking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu some time ago. At that time he was asked how to deal with a large army of bots who like to spread hate speech.
Elon Musk casually answered that the only way was to make X completely paid. “This is the only way I can think of to combat large armies of bots,” Musk said as quoted by the New York Post on Wednesday (20/9/2023).
According to Musk, adding a subscription fee to access social media site X will make it difficult for bots to create accounts because they have to register a credit card. He did not specify how much it would cost, but said that this would be cheaper than the Premium subscription fee which is currently offered for USD 8 or Rp. 123,000.
“The discussion is longer, but in my opinion, this is the only defense against a very large army of bots, because now AI is starting to be able to bypass CAPTCHA security,” he continued.
The announcement that X might be placed behind a paywall sparked outrage on the platform. Journalist David Leavitt tweeted that the move would be the death of the app.
“The reason why social media is popular is because it’s free and your friends use it. “Not everyone can afford to pay,” he said.
