The story of Suryo Nugroho’s life journey seems interesting to review. He is known to be a badminton athlete who is ranked fifth in the world.
Suryo was initially known to have the potential to play badminton. He decided to join a club in Surabaya when he was seven years old.
Suryo played various tournaments including an international class tournament entitled Surabaya City Walli Cup. In this tournament Suryo won a silver medal.
Six years later, disaster struck Suryo. Yes, when he was 12 years old, he had a serious accident which resulted in him losing his left arm (amputated).
This incident made Suryo depressed and finally decided to stop playing badminton for three years. The reason was, he felt he had lost the balance in his body to bring out its best abilities.
However, the support of his parents made Suryo rise. At that time his parents introduced him to NPCs. Since then, his confidence has returned because he saw many athletes who had the same shortcomings as him.
“I don’t play anymore, thinking about it in terms of balance and serving, I can’t think about it anymore, so adaptation is really difficult. I feel down there. At that time, I thought that the opponent must also have space like me, at least like that, even though there is a classification that might be more “lighter or heavier. At least they have weaknesses too. I had positive thoughts about whether I could win again? Turns out I can,” he said when interviewed, Thursday (14/9/2023).
Suryo then entered his first Badminton National Training Center for the 2010 Asian Para Games (AiPG) China. Up to now, he has never been absent from participating in National Training Center for 13 years.
