Britain has invited China to the international high-level meeting on artificial intelligence to be held in this country in November. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said the risks associated with technology cannot be contained if one of its key players is missing.
“We cannot protect the UK public from the dangers posed by artificial intelligence if we exclude one of the leading countries in this field,” Mr Cleverly said in a statement on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is calling for Britain to play a leading role globally in regulating the use of artificial intelligence. The meeting on November 1 and 2 will bring together representatives of various governments, technology companies and academics to discuss the risks posed by new technology.
Britain said the meeting will address topics such as the threat artificial intelligence poses to biosecurity, but also how it can be used for the public good, for example for safer transport.
Mr. Cleverly has laid out the need for a deeper engagement with Beijing, saying that it would be a mistake to isolate the second largest economy in the world. He added that Chinese help was needed in areas such as climate change and economic instability.
London is trying to improve ties with Beijing, but there has been growing domestic concern about Chinese activity in Britain in recent weeks after it emerged that a British parliamentary aide was arrested in March on suspicion of spying for the government. chinese.
The Chinese embassy in London has not yet responded to a request for comment on whether it will attend the meeting.
Britain has appointed technology expert Matt Clifford and former senior diplomat Jonathan Black to lead preparations for the meeting.
Last month Mr Clifford told the Reuters news agency that he hoped the UK meeting would set the tone for future international debates on how artificial intelligence should be used under the rules.
