TANGERANG – Indonesian lifter Rahmat Erwin Abdullah is experiencing a high level of self-confidence after breaking the record at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships (IWF World Championships). He now has a strong determination to bring home a medal from the 2022 Asian Games which will take place this year.
This athlete from South Sulawesi managed to win one gold medal and one silver medal at the 2023 IWF World Championships. Currently, Erwin is focused on facing the Asian Games which will be held in Hangzhou, China, from 23 September to 3 October 2023.
In the remaining time before the 2022 Asian Games are approaching, Erwin is committed to improving his achievements. This was done so that he could win a medal in this prestigious event.
“At the Asian Games, I will compete in the 73kg class and try to lose weight and improve my weightlifting performance,” said Erwin at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, on Wednesday (13/9/2023).
“God willing, I will try to perform as best as possible,” he added with confidence.
Erwin not only managed to bring home one gold medal and one silver medal, but also managed to break the world record at the 2023 IWF World Championships which took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He managed to set a record in the Clean and Jerk lift in the 81kg class by lifting a weight weighing 209kg.
Previously, this record was held by Bulgarian athlete, Nasar Karlos May Hasan, with a total weight lift of 208kg. This record was set by the 19 year old lifter at the 2021 World Championships.
Secretary General of the Indonesian Weightlifting Association (PABSI), Djoko Pramono, explained that the lifters who were sent to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, initially did not have a target of winning medals. They are competing with the main aim of getting a ticket quota for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Their main target is the Hangzhou Asian Games, China, and this is part of PABSI’s strategy to maintain their peak performance so they can achieve the best performance at the Asian Games.
