Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono offered the Chinese Government a number of opportunities for collaboration and cooperation related to the development of water resources infrastructure, especially dams.
This was conveyed by Minister Basuki in a bilateral meeting with Chinese Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying in Beijing, China, on Monday (11/09). The bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the XVIII World Water Congress in the Chinese capital, said the PUPR Ministry in a press release received by VOA, Wednesday (13/9).
“By the end of 2022, the Chinese government is recorded as having at least 98,000 dams. “And this is a good example for Indonesia as an effort to achieve food self-sufficiency,” said Minister Basuki in the statement.
Regarding this, Minister Basuki also invited the Chinese government to schedule a visit to three large dam construction sites in Indonesia, namely Jenelata in South Sulawesi, Riam Kiwa in South Kalimantan, and Pelosika in Southeast Sulawesi.
“The Indonesian government wants the Chinese government to ensure quality, and also explore technology and innovation that can be applied in dam development in Indonesia,” added Minister Basuki.
According to data from the World Hydropower Association (IHA), China is the largest producer of hydropower electricity in the world with a total generation capacity of 391 gigawatts (GW) in 2021. Around 81 percent of the world’s new hydropower capacity will be in China in 2021 .
Minister Basuki also invited the Chinese government to participate and send a delegation to the 10th World Water Forum, an international forum in the field of water resources, which is planned to be held in Bali in 2024.
“We are open to plans for sustainable water management cooperation because it can affect economic, social and environmental conditions,” China’s Water Resources Minister Li Guoying was quoted as saying in the same statement.
Minister Li Guoying also congratulated and succeeded in holding the 10th World Water Forum next year and promised to send a delegation to the forum.
During his visit to Beijing, Minister Basuki was accompanied by the Indonesian Ambassador to China Djauhari Oratmangun, Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati, Head of the Foreign Technical Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of State Secretary Novi Yanti, and Main Water Engineering Expert Ministry of PUPR Jarot Widyoko.
