Making history by qualifying for the U-23 Asian Cup, Erick Thohir: We’ll continue until the Paris Olympics!
SOLO – The Indonesian national team recorded a brilliant history by successfully advancing to the final round of the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup after beating Turkmenistan with a score of 2-0 in the U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers. This result ensures the Indonesian national team’s journey to the AFC U-23 Cup finals which will be held in Qatar in 2024.
PSSI General Chair Erick Thohir welcomed Indonesia’s qualification with enthusiasm. For him, it is important to maintain the winning mentality and tradition that has been formed.
“Thank God, the U-23 national team’s winning tradition continues. After the 2023 SEA Games gold, AFF U-23 finalists, the positive trend continues in the AFC U-23 Cup qualifiers. Let’s maintain the winning mentality and tradition in Qatar!” said Erick in his statement, Tuesday (12/09/2023).
Erick emphasized that the U-23 National Team’s real goal is in Qatar in 2024. With thorough preparation, he believes that the National Team has the potential to win an Olympic ticket. The condition is that the national team must reach the semifinals.
“Nothing is impossible in football. Even though the struggle in Qatar will not be easy, with a winning mentality that never gives up, we can continue this winning tradition to reach the 2024 Paris Olympics,” added Erick.
Erick emphasized that to achieve the maximum target in Qatar, the Indonesian U-23 National Team must maintain focus. He also invited the players not to be satisfied with just qualifying for the U-23 Asian Cup. “This winning mentality must be maintained, no matter who the opponent is. Today it could be Turkmenistan, but in Qatar, we must still have the same mentality, no matter the opponent is Japan or South Korea,” stressed Erick.
Under the leadership of Erick Thohir at PSSI, the Indonesian National Team recorded extraordinary achievements. Starting with the good performance of the U-19 National Team in the Asian Cup, even though they were in a group with Uzbekistan and Iraq, who were both champions and runners-up in the competition, Indonesia managed to compete well in the group phase.
The positive trend for the national team continued at the 2023 SEA Games with the national team winning the title after waiting for 32 years. In the AFF U-23 Cup, the national team became runners-up by only losing on penalties in the final against Vietnam. Now, in the U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers, the national team performed perfectly by winning all the wins and scoring a total of 11 goals without conceding. At senior level, the positive trend of the Indonesian National Team has also led to the best FIFA record in the last 12 years for Garuda.
