AYIA NAPA – Five Israeli men were detained in Cyprus on charges of gang-raping a British woman.
The victim, aged 20, was on holiday in Ayia Napa when he was kidnapped and attacked by the suspects.
The five suspects, aged 19 and 20, have been detained for an additional eight days, as ordered by a district court judge in Famagusta following their arrest on Sunday evening.
The victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, reported to police that she had been sexually assaulted by a group of Israeli men, who forcibly took her from the hotel pool area to her room.
“They will be held in our holding cells in Paralimni, we take these allegations seriously,” said a police officer in Ayia Napa, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The officer described the victim as “extremely distressed.”
According to the Cyprus News Agency, Wednesday (6/9/2023), the arrest of the suspects occurred after the police received testimony from witnesses which corroborated the allegations.
Furthermore, five Israeli citizens and one British citizen will undergo medical evaluation.
A spokesperson for the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office told the BBC: “We are supporting a British woman in Cyprus and are in contact with local authorities.”
