SURABAYA – Uston Nawawi succeeded in bringing Persebaya Surabaya through five 2023/2024 League 1 matches without losing. Acting as interim coach, Uston has delivered 4 wins and 1 draw during his duties.
After parting ways with coach Aji Santoso, Persebaya management gave Uston Nawawi the task of coaching for five matches. It turns out that Uston managed to carry out this responsibility very well.
In his fifth match, Uston also delivered a 2-1 victory over Borneo FC for Persebaya. This positive result was obtained by the team nicknamed Bajol Ijo at its home ground at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium, Surabaya, Sunday (3/9/2023).
Uston Nawawi feels grateful that the five matches he has played have been completed without defeat. Moreover, the match against Borneo FC yesterday was quite difficult. The team nicknamed Pesut Etam came with a record of 7 matches without defeat.
“We know that Borneo is also a top team and maybe they haven’t lost in 7 matches. Thank God, today we managed to beat,” said Uston Nawawi after the match.
While in Uston’s hands, Bajol Ijo never experienced defeat, even though the living legend of Persebaya remained humble. He said that he was only carrying out the mandate from management to improve his ranking in the standings.
He himself was reluctant to predict whether he would return to lead the team permanently amidst the team management’s efforts to find a new head coach.
“We’ll see what’s important is my job, we carry it out well. The most important thing is that, thank God, in these 5 matches we got 13 points, and now we are probably in 5th place,” said the 45 year old caretaker coach.
