LINIMASA – A tragic fate befell a grandfather named Jamsari, a resident of Kegundan Village, Pemalang, Central Java. This 60 year old grandfather died while undergoing the ritual of fasting from food and drink for 7 days in an effort to seek supernatural powers in the Dead River at Parangkusumo Beach, Bantul.
This unfortunate incident was first revealed when the victim was found dead on Saturday, September 2 2023, at around 18.00 WIB.
At that time, the victim’s colleagues who had accompanied him for the last few days were unable to save his life. The victim’s condition had deteriorated greatly and he died before he could be taken to hospital.
The chronology of events began on Sunday, August 27 2023, when the victim and three friends arrived at Parangkusumo Beach at 20.00 WIB. The victim’s group, who came from Pemalang, consisted of two grandfathers, including the victim, and two young men.

Kretek Police Chief, AKP Haryanto said the victim died at around 18.00 WIB. The victim’s colleagues couldn’t do much when the old grandfather’s condition decreased.
“So it wasn’t the discovery of the bodies of people whose friends were there,” said Haryanto, reported by SuaraJogja.
According to him, the four of them started the ritual of penance at Kali Mati, Parangkusumo Beach, Parangtritis, Kretek. One of the key aspects of this ritual is fasting for seven consecutive days, which in Javanese tradition is known as ngebleng fasting.
The victim undergoes a ritual by not eating or drinking for seven days and seven nights, seeking supernatural powers and spiritual experiences. It is part of certain traditions followed by some individuals seeking deep understanding or spiritual experiences.
On Saturday, September 2 2023, at around 17.00 WIB, the victim felt very weak and asked one of his colleagues to buy him a drink of young coconut water.

Without realizing the danger, the victim drank the young coconut water, which is known to contain dangerous substances when consumed on an empty stomach after not eating or drinking for days.
Only 15 minutes after drinking young coconut water, the victim suddenly fainted. One of the victim’s colleagues immediately sought help from a tourist Jeep driver nearby to take him to hospital. However, before the victim could be rushed to hospital, his life was gone.
“So, pure young coconut water does have some kind of alcohol in it, but it’s not alcohol, I don’t know the name. Drinking it can actually have fatal consequences,”
After the investigation process was completed, the grandfather died due to extreme fasting from eating and drinking for seven days. His body, which was already old, was unable to withstand such conditions.
“From the results of the examination, it is estimated that the victim died in 1-2 hours. There were no signs of violence and there was no discharge from the anus and penis,” he explained.
The victim’s body was then transported to Pemalang using an ambulance owned by SAR Satlinmas Region 3 for burial.
