Do you feel that the paracetamol given when your child has a fever is not effective? As a result, your little one’s fever is back, right?
Many people still have misconceptions about the meaning of fever, Mother. Many people think that fever is a disease, even though fever is a symptom of disease.
The problem regarding fever and paracetamol was then explained by a pediatrician, Dr. Dhani Somodihardjo, on his TikTok account. Previously, HaiBunda had received permission from Dr. Dhani to quote his statement.

The reason an infected body has a fever
Doctor Dhani said that the cause of fever generally occurs due to infection, not just an illness. Fever can occur when a person is dehydrated or when a baby is swaddled too tightly.
“Even though the cause of fever is not just disease. For example, if people don’t have enough fluids, don’t drink enough, are dehydrated, fever can also occur,” he said, quoted by the TikTok account @dr_dhanisomodihardjo, Tuesday (29/8/2023).
“Or if you swaddle the baby too tightly or the swaddle has too much fever, the baby can also have a fever. Most often, fever is a symptom of infection,” he continued.
Furthermore, Dr. Dhani revealed that there is a reason why the body experiences fever when infected. This is because the body’s immune cells work more effectively if the body temperature is slightly increased.
“Because the body’s immune cells work more effectively to fight infection if the body temperature is slightly raised. That’s why the body will produce a process called fever,” he explained.
Why is paracetamol not effective in reducing fever?
Doctor Dhani revealed that giving paracetamol to children who have a fever due to infection will not reduce the fever. Not without reason, this is because what is treated is only the symptoms and not the cause of the fever, Mother.
“For example, if there is a child, let’s say there is a child with a typhoid fever infection, the Indonesian word for typhus. The child definitely has a fever, then you give him paracetamol without treating the typhus, do you think the fever will go down or not? Certainly not because of what you are treating only the symptoms. But the main cause or basis for why the child has a fever, is not treated. That’s why the fever keeps coming back and forth,” he said.
“Infection can be caused by various things. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, it can be caused by fungi. So, as long as you don’t treat these three causes of infection, the fever will not go away,” he added.
Giving paracetamol to a child with a fever is not to reduce body temperature. The main purpose of giving paracetamol is for your little one to feel more comfortable and not lose too much fluid.
“So the target is not to reduce the fever. Because if you treat the infection, the fever will definitely go down,” explained Dhani.
