Films about handsome “princes” are always full of fans, especially if the character is described as smart, rich, or influential. However, keep in mind that not all favorite characters in movies deserve to be role models.
As reviewed by Screent Rant, many Hollywood films that were popular in the past secretly featured male protagonists with less commendable behavior, or the modern term “red flag”.
Sadly, this bad trait seems normalized through the depiction of a character that is popular and idolized by many people. In fact, in reality their nature will only cause anxiety and problems if it really exists in the real world.
What kind of character is meant? Here are some examples of old Hollywood movies where male characters are secretly red flags but are very popular!
1. American Psycho

American Psycho (2000) tells the life of a rich young executive who becomes an idol named Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale). Narrated as a successful person, he is known as a person who does not want to lose in competition, and chooses a sadistic soul. Until finally, fell in love with Evelyn (Reese Witherspoon).
Even though in the end Bateman is told that he no longer has an obsession with killing, in real life this may never happen. Psychopathic soul is a mental disorder problem that cannot be cured just by falling in love. You definitely don’t want to meet a guy like this in your life.
2. Sequel to Harry Potter

Since the first film was released in 2001, the Harry Potter sequels have stolen the world’s attention and become one of the highest-grossing films. The plot tells of a boy named Harry Potter who managed to survive the death curse of Lord Voldemort.
When he entered the world of magic, he turned into a very popular celebrity. Plus, he’s also good at Quidditch and even managed to save the world several times.
But apart from his exciting adventures and his desire to save others, Harry Potter is also not a role model. Countless times he broke the school rules and represented someone who was lazy to study. Even when it comes to romance, he is a doubtful person, so his relationship with Cho Chang does not go smoothly.
3. Iron Man

Iron Man (2008) is the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise and is based on the Marvel Comics character. It tells the story of how Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) developed the technology that turned him into a superhero named Iron Man.
Even though he is known as a smart and wealthy scientist, Tony Stark is also known as someone who is greedy and only cares about money. It was this arrogance that got him into trouble and was kidnapped by terrorists who felt aggrieved. Ironically, this film actually puts the “victims” of Stark’s greed as villains who deserve to be eradicated.
In terms of romance, Tony Stark is also quite romantic and willing to do anything for his girlfriend, Pepper Potts. However, in his youth Stark was a man who liked to play women and tended to be patriarchal.
4. (500) Days of Summer

This romantic comedy drama genre film was released in 2009 and tells the twists and turns of the relationship between Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel). The two met as co-workers, and then grew closer due to having a lot in common. Unfortunately, their relationship didn’t go smoothly because Summer didn’t think about being more than friends.
The scene where Tom Hansen broke his heart moved the audience because of how much he loves Summer. However, Tom’s actions also cannot be justified because he never listens to what Summer wants.
The two of them got into a fight because Tom forced Summer to watch a movie she didn’t want to watch. Even when his love is unrequited, Tom still persists in pursuing him without wanting to understand Summer’s feelings.
5. Twilight Saga

The love story of Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is one of the most iconic stories of the millennium. The Twilight Saga itself was released for the first time in 2008 and tells how Edward Cullen loves Bella so much that he is willing to do anything for her.
However, Edward Cullen also took red flag actions when representing his love for his lover. He is known to spy on Bella frequently. Even though this is done for security purposes, a man who likes stalking like this is definitely very annoying because he doesn’t respect his partner’s privacy.
Those are some old Hollywood movies whose male characters are secretly red flags but are very popular. Even though it is told from a positive perspective, it cannot be denied that their characters are not things you want to meet in real life.
