Brilio.net – It was 19.00 WIB, Saturday (26/8), a group of dancers were getting ready to perform at the closing stage of ArtJog2023. The red light is on, indicating the stage is about to begin. The audience deliberately gathered to enjoy the dance by the maestro Sardono W Kusumo entitled Men Ta (Too) Way.
Do not imagine this stage is held indoors. Not Sardono, if he doesn’t present an art performance that is different from the others. The stage is under a banyan tree on the east side of the Jogja National Museum, Jogja.
As soon as the dancers enter, the spotlight is on the dancers who are wearing traditional Mentawai clothing. Wood is the basic material for kabit clothing for men. A colorful beaded necklace adorns the neck. Then on the arms there are leaves called lekkeu. On the head, there is a luat attached with several strands of chicken feathers or gougouk feathers.
Likewise, the girls who took part in the dance appeared wearing yellow and red sobs with headbands. They performed Turuk Uliyat Manyang, which is a seagull-like dance. They dance around the stage, stomping their feet while moving their hands beautifully and gracefully like seagulls.

The dance is accompanied by Mentawai language singing. For your information, every Mentawai dance depicts their life in the forest and close to nature. The next performance was danced by Mentawai tribal elders, shamans or Sikerei also performed the Turuk Laggai dance. The rhythmic stomping of the feet along with the singing and the sound of the music made the evening atmosphere of the Man Ta (Too) Way performance feel magical.
The stage landscape which is located in front of a banyan tree and red spotlights adds to the magical impression. Their appearance enchanted the audience through their stomping feet and loud chanting.
Another interesting performance that was also presented was Turuk Uliat Bilou which is known as the monkey dance. Turuk or this dance tells the story of a group of monkeys dancing happily and happily. In this dance, young people and elders of the Mentawai tribe participate in the Uliat Bilou dance. “Uwiiii uwwwiiii uwiiwiwii,” they chanted like imitating monkey sounds.
