WASHINGTON – Former President of the United States (US) Donald Trump’s historic mugshot, which was posted by a Georgia courthouse on Thursday night, provides a unique opportunity for both his campaign team and his foes. The photo has been transformed into T-shirts, glasses, mugs, posters and even a bobblehead doll.
The photo of Trump in a red tie, shiny hair and a scowl was taken as the Republican nominee for president was arrested on more than a dozen felony charges, part of a criminal case stemming from his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Supporters and campaign managers have welcomed the photos of his arrest, as they support Trump’s claims that the allegations against him are politically motivated.
For critics, the photo is a symbol that a long list of legal problems has finally befallen him.
The Trump Save America fundraising committee is selling “NEVER GIVE UP!” mug shot t-shirts (USD 34.00), drink holders (USD 15.00 for two) and coffee mugs (USD 25.00). Meanwhile, his son, Don Jr., sells “FREE TRUMP” mug shot shirts (USD 29.99) and posters (USD 19.99).
On the other side of the political foe, the Lincoln Project, a prominent anti-Trump group founded by the Republican Party, is selling glasses ($55.00 for six) with a picture of the mug and “FAFO”, short for “Fuck Around and Find Out,” the rallying cry. Trump critics. Etsy, a craft site, has dozens of mock-up products, including a Taylor Swift concert T-shirt parody ($26.00).
In Los Angeles, a T-shirt shop not affiliated with any of the campaigns began selling tops with the image on Friday afternoon.
“I think this is very classic consumerism in this country,” said shopper CJ Butler of Atlanta, Georgia.
“Hey, this is Trump. He sells everything, so why don’t you have a T-shirt?” he continued as quoted by Reuters, Sunday (27/8/2023).
