Fraud mode can be done in many ways. Knowing a series of cases makes us always vigilant. Including cases of fraud committed through dating apps. Beauties remember the Netflix documentary Tinder Swindler directed by Felicity Morris? Fraud occurred in Europe under the guise of romance that had gone viral everywhere. Unfortunately, “Tinder swindler” also happened in Indonesia.
A woman with the pseudonym Cinta became one of the victims who suffered a loss of Rp. 1 billion due to fraudsters claiming to be from Malaysia. According to Cinta, he experienced losses in only about two months.
Initially, Cinta met Vincent (not his real name) through a dating application in April 2023. Not long after chatting via a dating application, they decided to move to Whatsapp.

Cinta told CNBC Indonesia that Vincent “claims to be a Chinese-Malaysian, a widower who has no children, and the only child of wealthy parents who own a business in Malaysia”. Cinta, who is a teacher, also said that Vincent works as an executive chef in a hotel. “But he got a promotion and was promoted to management,” continued Cinta.
Cinta also describes Vincent as an extraordinary person, such as speaking politely, always treating his partner well, never demanding many things, broad-minded, and has a mature vision and mission for the future. “I’ve never asked for weird stuff like that. Really never. I like (with Vincent) because our conversation is quality. That’s why I finally put my heart into it. Moreover, he has far-reaching thoughts,” said Love.

The relationship that was carried out between Cinta and Vincent was only limited to voice messages (voice note). Cinta has never met Vincent in person, has never spoken either by telephone or video call.

During the two months of being in a relationship, Vincent always talked about his business in one of the marketplaces that was recognized as originating from China. In that story, he admits that he always gets a lot of orders from consumers. The man whose real name is unknown also “brainwashed” subtly so that Cinta is interested in joining his business.
“He once suggested that he want to run this online shop business so that when we get married we can have additional income, not just depending on one job. I felt like I was hypnotized without realizing it because he was talking about this online shop so I thought ‘Oh it’s good to run this business too, it turns out okay’ like that.”
Seeing very good behavior and never pushy, the woman in her 30s decided to join Vincent’s business.
