KIEV – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says his military is making progress slowly but steadily against Russian lines. He said that as media reports suggested that Kiev’s supporters in the West were losing faith in the counterattack.
“We can see which way… we are moving forward. It is very difficult for us, because there are massive mines, thousands of mines,” the Ukrainian leader told a news conference on Wednesday, when asked about the armed campaign against Russia.
However, the Ukrainian leader – speaking with visiting Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in Kiev – confirmed that based on reports from the military, the country’s troops are gradually advancing.
“Slowly, but in the right direction,” he said as quoted by Russia Today, Thursday (24/8/2023).
The Ukrainian government launched a counteroffensive against Russia in early June, but has so far failed to breach Russian lines or gain any significant territorial advantage.
According to Moscow’s military estimates and reports in the Western media, Kiev suffered heavy losses.
The New York Times reported this week that US officials were critical of Ukraine’s military strategy, arguing that Kiev should concentrate its forces on a decisive offensive in one direction in the south, instead of spreading them along a long front. .
“Zelensky does not want it to appear as though he is giving up on trying to reclaim lost territory in the east by moving troops elsewhere,” the paper said.
