In the framework of the high-level meeting of the Balkans, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also met in Athens with the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, from whom he received support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Ukraine has not recognized Kosovo’s independence, and Belgrade, for its part, does not recognize Russia’s annexation of parts of Ukrainian territory.
The Serbian president said on Instagram that he had a “good and open” conversation with the Ukrainian president in the framework of the Balkan meeting and that they discussed issues related to the territorial integrity of both countries.
“I said that when it comes to the issue of territorial integrity, Serbia, unlike others, is sincere and supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine. It was a sincere and friendly conversation that I hope will create cooperation with a country that has never done any harm to Serbia. I think that there will be no change in the position of Ukraine, as far as the territorial integrity of Serbia is concerned”, said Mr. Vucic.
Serbia has condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine in the UN and other international forums, but has not imposed sanctions on Moscow, although it continues to maintain trade and military cooperation with its traditional ally – Russia, while seeking to join the European Union.
Ukraine has not recognized Kosovo’s independence, and Belgrade, for its part, does not recognize Russia’s annexation of parts of Ukrainian territory. According to Serbian President Vucic, the meeting also discussed Belgrade-Kiev cooperation, as well as the situation in the municipalities in the north of Kosovo.
Meanwhile, Germany’s foreign minister was asked during a press conference with Estonia’s foreign minister about the drone attacks on Russia and said Ukraine has the right to defend its people.
“Russia attacked Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine has the right under the UN Charter to defend its country and its people. Russia is in violation of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force. Russia relentlessly bombs civilian targets in Ukraine: grain warehouses, hospitals, churches. And Ukraine defends itself within the framework of international law,” said Mrs. Baerbock.
Germany is considering sending equipment to help Ukraine clear large areas in the southeastern part of the country, where the Russian military has laid numerous mines to thwart a Ukrainian counteroffensive.
