AUSTRALIA – It has recently been reported that Australia will buy Tomahawk missiles from the United States (US). The missile is a cruise missile capable of reaching long-range targets.
The purchase is expected to enhance Australia’s long-range strike capabilities amid tensions with China. It is known that Canberra will be ready to spend USD 833 million in order to increase its long-range attack capabilities.
The Tomahawk missile itself is known as the most sophisticated missile and has many advantages. Any country that uses this missile will have a long-range attack that is classified as capable.
The following are some of the advantages possessed by the US Tomahawk missile:
1. Has a Very Far Range

The Tomahawk missile is a missile capable of traveling as far as 1,250 km to 2,500 km, depending on the variant and configuration. So that this missile makes it possible to attack targets that are difficult to reach by planes or other missiles.
Reporting from the dsca page, the Tomahawk missile purchased by Australia is the Block V version, which is the newest and most advanced version of the Tomahawk missile.
This version has increased capabilities, integrating a new search system so as to be able to reach targets more than 1,000 miles (about 1,600 km).
2. Can Fly Low
The Tomahawk missile is designed to fly at (extreme) low altitudes with high subsonic speeds. This missile can fly about 50 meters above sea level. This makes the Tomahawk missile very difficult to detect and intercept by enemy radars or air defense systems.
3. High Accuracy
The Tomahawk missile is equipped with a GPS navigation system, TERCOM (Terrain Contour Matching), and DSMAC (Digital Scene Matching Area Correlation). These systems allow the missile to follow terrain contours and match satellite imagery with the image obtained by the missile’s camera. The accuracy of this missile is estimated at around 5-10 meters.
4. Flexible Warhead
The Tomahawk missile can carry various types of warheads, both nuclear and conventional. Conventional warheads can be high-explosive bombs, sub-munitions dispersing bombs, or combined-effect bombs. Nuclear warheads can have an explosive power of up to 200 kilotons.
5. Multiple Launch Platforms
Tomahawk missiles can be launched from various platforms, be it land, air, sea or underwater. The missile can be launched from surface ships, submarines, land-launched vehicles or bombers.
With this convenience, it will certainly provide high flexibility and tactical capabilities for users of this missile.
6. Technology Update
The Tomahawk missile has continued to experience technological updates since it was first produced in the 1970s. The newest variant of this missile is Block V, which has better maneuverability, two-way communication, and the ability to change targets during flight.
