Meta Platforms is poised to launch a web version of its new social media platform, Threads, hoping to outperform X, formerly known as Twitter, as its initial spike in users wanes.
The widely anticipated web version will make Threads even more useful for powerful users such as brands, corporate accounts, advertisers and journalists.
Meta didn’t give a launch date, but Instagram lead Adam Mosseri says this could happen in the near future.

“We’re close to the web…,” Mosseri said in a post on Friday’s Threads. The launch could happen as early as this week, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
Threads, which launched as Android and iOS apps on July 5 and reached 100 million users in just five days, saw its popularity slump as users returned to the more familiar X platform after rushing into Meta’s new offering.
But in just over a month, its daily active users on the Android app slumped to 10.3 million from a peak of 49.3 million, according to a report from analytics platform Similarweb dated Aug. 10.
Meanwhile, management acted quickly to roll out new features. Threads now offers the ability to set notifications for accounts and view them in a chronological feed type.
In the near future there will also be an improved search that will allow users to search for specific posts instead of just searching accounts. (uh/ab)
