A glitch in Bank of Ireland’s electronic system caused incidents at ATMs across the country last night as thousands of customers queued at ATMs trying to take advantage.
The bank notified customers early yesterday afternoon that there was a problem with its online application and website after being inundated with complaints.
Meanwhile, in the evening, customers found they could withdraw money from ATMs even if their accounts were empty.
This led to thousands of people flocking to the ATMs, while Garda agents were instructed to clear the queues.
“The news spread quickly after 5pm and people rushed to get money they don’t have. It’s like withdrawing money for free,” said one of those waiting in line.
In some cases, the glitch with the online application allowed people who had no money in their account to transfer up to €1,000 to their Revolut accounts. They could then withdraw the money through any ATM.
Although the hysteria became collective and hundreds of people managed to get money they didn’t have, the Irish Guard said in a statement that every cent withdrawn will have to be returned.
Bank of Ireland also warned customers in a statement late on Tuesday that any money taken from their account would be debited.
