LONDON – Arsenal are focused on chasing the 2022/2023 English Premier League trophy after being eliminated in the last 16 of the Europa League. Coach Mikel Arteta admitted he was disappointed, but this situation brought clarity to the Gunners’ targets this season.

The Gunner was eliminated by Sporting CP in the Europa League after losing 3-5 on penalties at the Emirates Stadium, Friday (17/6/2023) early morning WIB. The high-fives were held after extra time in the second leg, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Thus the aggregate becomes 3-3.

Mikel Arteta’s men have been knocked out of the three cup competitions they have participated in (FA Cup, English League Cup and Europa League). However, they are currently five points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the 2022/2023 Premier League standings. The Gunners could win their first English title since 2004.

Now the Gunners have 11 matches left to play, starting with a visit to Crystal Palace on Sunday (19/3/2023).

“It’s a big blow, but it brings clarity to the season,” Arteta told Arsenal’s official website, as quoted by Reuters. “There are 11 games to play, 11 Premier League games and a big final against Crystal Palace. The focus has to be there, the energy has to be there and learn from tonight.”

“We have to learn from that, but the best thing now is to react and show the same commitment, more quality and play better against Crystal Palace to beat them.”

Arteta had bad news with two players injured against Sporting. Takehiro Tomiyasu had to be substituted early on and defender William Lilina also limped off shortly after.

“Tomiyasu looks very serious, that’s what he told me,” Arteta told reporters.

“It’s very early and hard to tell. William, I don’t know. He felt uncomfortable and couldn’t continue so we had to withdraw him.”
