DHAKA – A terrible accident occurred in Bangladesh. A speeding bus veered off a main highway in central Bangladesh and plunged into a ditch, killing at least 19 people and injuring dozens.
“The death toll could rise, as some of the injured passengers are in critical condition,” said Anowar Hossain, a police officer, as quoted by Reuters. The fatal accident occurred in Shibchar, a city 80 km from the capital Dhaka.
“The bus carrying more than 40 passengers fell about 9 meters into a roadside ditch after breaking through the fence of the newly built Padma River Bridge toll road,” Hossain continued.
The bus driver was reported dead. “He apparently lost control of the vehicle after the bus tire exploded,” Hossain continued. He also added that the cause of the accident was being investigated.
Accidents on public roads are common in Bangladesh, often blamed for reckless driving, old vehicles and poor safety regulations. Road accidents kill thousands of people every year.
In 2018, a series of massive student protests, sparked by the deaths of two teenagers, forced the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to agree to increase the maximum prison sentence to five years from three for causing death by reckless driving.
