SOUTHAMPTON – Tottenham Hotspur failed to pick up three points after being held to a draw by bottom club Southampton in the 2022/223 English Premier League. The Lilywhites – nicknamed the Spurs – played 3-3 at St. Mary’s Stadium, Saturday (18/3/2023).
The result kept the Spurs in 4th place with 49 points. Antonio Conte’s troops failed to overtake Manchester United (MU) in 3rd place (50 points). While Southampton are still sinking at the bottom of the standings with 23 points.
Pedro Porro opened the spurs advantage in the 45+1′ minute after maximizing Son Heung-min’s pass. However, Southampton replied through Che Adams who received a pass from Theo Walcott in the 46th minute.
Harry Kane put Spurs ahead again in the 65th minute and Ivan Perisic’s volley made it 3-1. However, Theo Walcott brought Southampton back to cut the deficit in the 77th minute.

However, a controversial penalty in the final minutes (90+3′) converted by James Ward-Prowse interrupted Tottenham’s victory which was in sight.
Starting in the 90th minute Tottenham substitute, Pape Sarr, was considered to have fouled Ainsley Maitland-Niles when he tried to block a bouncing ball.
After a lengthy VAR check, a penalty was awarded to Southampton. Ward-Prowse coolly sent a spot-kick high into the top corner past former Southampton keeper Fraser Forster.
Southampton captain Ward-Prowse admitted it was a tense moment when he converted the penalty against Forster.
“Yeah, there’s a lot of pressure,” Ward-Prowse said. “I know Fraser very well, he was once my next-door neighbour, so I’ve taken a couple of penalties against him in my garden with my boys, so something’s going on there.”
Tottenham striker Richarlison played just five minutes before being replaced by Dejan Kulusevski and then Southampton defender Armel Bella-Kotchap picked up a shoulder injury and was replaced by Mohammed Salisu.
Tottenham’s fragility is back and they have now dropped league points from a two goal lead twice in 2023.
